  • How to use a #0-SC Hand Swager

#0-1/4 SC Hand Swager Video Transcript

Thank you for watching our instruction video on Loos’ LOCOLOC® #0-1/4 single cavity handswaging tool

Our tools are individually boxed and you’ll notice that the number of the tool and the UPC code is printed clearly on the end of each box

Contained inside each box, you’ll find a package of lubrication grease

Instructions, and a handy go gauge for measuring the after swage diameter of your compressions

This go gauge is used for the one quarter inch sleeves that you’ll be swaging with the tool

And we have complete instructions on how to properly use the tool and also on the back you’ll see we have replacement parts available for the use of your tool over its lifetime

Notice the snap over center action when closing the handles of the tool

The snap over action ensures that each compression is complete before the tool closes

and you’ll want to keep from using the tool in hazardous areas

When cutting wire ropes when using this handswaging tool, we recommend that you use the FELCO brand cable cutter

Proudly made in Switzerland to the highest manufacturing standards

It’s the best cable cutter really made for cutting wire rope

And in this case we’ll be using the C 16

This is the largest FELCO tool that is made

This tool is actually used by putting the tool on the floor

And when you cut the rope you’re actually pressing your body weight against the cable

    It cuts quite easily

Most importantly though you’ll see that there’s no frayed edges on the end of the cable

And there’s no stray wires that will get in the way for inserting the cable into the wire rope sleeve

The cable inserts easily into the copper sleeve

And for this demonstration we’ll be using a simple loop connection

And we’ll be compressing the copper sleeve

And you’ll notice that there’s a tail of wire rope that sticks out the end of the sleeve equal to one cable diameter in this case we’re using quarter inch wire rope

This tool is a single cavity tool for quarter inch wire rope only

And one compression has been made on the sleeve

Since this is a quarter inch copper sleeve this will require four compressions to be complete

But after the first compression, take your go gauge and measure the after swage diameter of the sleeve slipping it into the proper 1/4 inch slot

It should easily pass back and forth into the quarter inch slot and this will show that the after swage is complete and accurate

You’ll be swaging this sleeve a total of four times to make sure that the cable connection will exceed the breaking strength of the cable

This is what your sleeve should look like after it’s been compressed four times

And then you can take your go gauge and you can measure each one of the compressions to make sure you have the proper after swage diameter

When properly done, this connection is stronger than the wire rope itself

In other words, the cable will break before the copper sleeve connection will fail

You can always refer to the chart that comes with the tool to find the proper number of compressions for each size sleeve that you’ll be using

And all of our LOCOLOC handswaging tools are fully adjustable

Just with one quarter turn of the set screw with the allen wrench will readjust your tool to the proper after swage diameter

    #0-SC HAND SWAGER SERIES – Sizes 3/64″ to 5/16″

Cable splicing is much easier if the cable is cut clean without frayed ends. We highly recommend C7, C9, C12 or C16 cable cutters as shown in the Loos & Co. Cableware Division catalog. LOCOLOC® Oval and Stop sleeves in a complete range of sizes are available through the Loos & Co. Cableware Division. Sleeves elongate after compression. To assure maximum holding allow the end of the cable to extend beyond the sleeve after it is compressed. Keep the jaws of the swager at right angles to the sleeve being compressed, making sure the sleeve is aligned in the jaw grooves. Then close the handles of the swager completely. (Note: for lap splices, at least two oval sleeves should be used.) Each Loos & Co. LOCOLOC® Swager is designed to work with one or more specific size sleeves. FOR USE ON ALL METAL CONSTRUCTION CABLES, 7×7, 7×19, 6×19 IWRC ON SIZES UP TO 5/16. You will not obtain performance if you do not use the proper swager and sleeve combination. All compressions must be gauged to assure maximum holding strength, and it is recommended that all assemblies should be proof tested.

    SWAGER OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

    Figure 1

Place sleeve to be compressed in groove in swaging tool. Single cavity tools should match cable size to be swaged. Length of cable equal to the cable diameter should extend beyond length of sleeve to achieve maximum holding. (See arrow in figure 3)

    Figure 2

Keep jaws of swaging tool at right angles to the sleeve to be compressed, making sure the sleeve is aligned in the jaw grooves. Close tool completely. Tool handles should snap shut indicating complete closure.

Use Swaging gauge provided with the tool to check proper after swage diameter. Compressed sleeve should slide freely into size slot of gauge.

    SWAGER OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

Your Loos & Co. LOCOLOC® Swager has been designed to give you years of trouble-free service. To obtain the best possible performance, we recommend: (1) clean and lubricate all moving parts regularly; (2) keep all bolts tight; (3) keep your swager properly adjusted using the following simple procedure:

Each LOCOLOC® Swager is supplied with a gauge. Select the slot in the gauge corresponding to the sleeve size being compressed. The compressed portion of the sleeve should pass into the gauge easily. If it does not, then adjust your swager as follows:

With the handles apart, use a 3/16″ Allen wrench to tighten set screw in handle 1/4 turn. Then compress sleeve and check with the gauge. Continue this procedure until the compressed portion of the sleeve passes easily into the gauge. These instructions apply to all #1-SC, #0, #0-SC, and #1-BSC Loos & Co. LOCOLOC® Swagers.

“CAUTION” OVER ADJUSTMENT WILL CAUSE THE ADJUSTMENT BOLT TO BREAK!
